Leading the tunes from the fiddle we have two excellent players. They have a wealth of experience between them, playing for ceilidhs, and other events.
Cameron is a keen fiddler and has played in many different bands in St Andrews and Glasgow, and his constant energy and ideas ensure the band always has a lively edge to our sound. As well as playing fiddle, Cameron also plays banjo and guitar which you might get a chance to hear in some tunes. He is currently studying Geography at the University of Glasgow and aims to pursue a career in Polar research and exploration. Cameron always tries hard to merge these two interests, even if it has meant strapping a ukulele to his rucksack in the past whilst attempting Himalayas summits!
Jake is a fiddle player whose Northumbrian roots blend with the Scottish and Shetland influences of the other members. This helps the band create a diverse and individual sound. After all, folk music is all about sharing culture and he’ll happily don a kilt for the occasional trip to Germany (see the pictures tab for proof!). As well as playing in the band he ran the Folk Music Group at Glasgow University for two years, set up a weekly folk session at a local bar. He's now graduated and moved to the the north coast in Caithness where he's enjoying getting to grips with a whole new set of music and musicians. Jake's always keen to travel down for the weekend when given the excuse so there's a good chance he'll be the one doing most of the talking on the night.
Cam on the Banjo
Spoots the Band Deer
Callum's Double Bass
Jo on piano
Rory on Guitar
In the rhythm section we have Rory on guitar, Johanna on Piano, and Callum on bass,
Rory was immersed in traditional Scottish music from an early age - listening to Jimmy Shand on repeat with his grandfather. His main love is his guitar but he also can turn his hand to the piano/accordion and sings in some numbers. Just after graduating Rory was scooped up for a job as an app developer in Edinburgh where he continues to enjoy photography, hiking and snowboarding in his spare time
Jo's also currently based in Edinburgh where she's continuing her studies to become a teacher having graduated in Physics from Glasgow. You can really hear her Shetland upbringing in her piano playing, and she adds a whole extra dimension to our sound. As well as enjoying her piano skills, you might also get to hear her on the flute bringing additional warmth to the sound of the band, and she sings for many of our vocal numbers.
Callum plays bass and he is sure to keep the rhythm driving and give the band a good beefy sound and occasionally sings. Sadly he took a graduate engineering job in Norway, but he still makes it over for occasions like Hogmanay! He can be seen on his traditional double bass, bass guitar, or his travel size bass ukulele, and he also tends to front the band when he's in town. Callum is probably the most musically diverse member of the band, having playing in a host of music groups, including a swing, soul and mowtown function band, jazz bands, so even when he isn't here in person his influence definitely is!
